While the online social components add to the fun, fortunately, the game offers full support for offline play. There are simple puzzles, while plenty of collectibles in the game allow players to customize their character. However, it is made distinct from the mainline LEGO Star Wars series through social components, allowing online players to interact and join each other's levels for co-op gaming. The core gameplay loop tasks players with entering 'HoloSims' in order to relive classic moments from the Star Wars series and remove the corruption from each HoloSim. However, some familiar Star Wars characters do appear throughout, including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader. Many of the characters in the game are unique to LEGO Star Wars: Castaways. LEGO Star Wars: Castaways is the first online social, action-adventure LEGO Star Wars game on Apple Arcade where players can build and customize their own in-game LEGO minifigure, team up with friends and explore Star Wars locations to uncover and solve mysteries. Players can battle enemies, interact with other online 'Castaways,' fly spaceships, and more. Players are able to create an original LEGO Star Wars mini-figure character and explore a previously unknown planet in the Star Wars universe.
The game serves as a departure from the main LEGO Star Wars series and has been described as a social action-adventure game.
